Orzo with Roasted Vegetables on the Food Network

Family bbq on Sunday to celebrate my nephew's birthday. I'm planning on making this orzo salad from the Barefoot Contessa.
Great use for the basil I've been growing in pots by our front door! I might skip the roasted eggplant, which sounds like perhaps too much work.
Anyone have another great orzo salad recipe to suggest?

Easy Summer Cocktail Recipes

Summer Drinks

Three-Ingredient Summer Cocktails

The Times asked some of the country’s top bartenders to suggest streamlined coolers built for easy warm-weather drinking. The rules were simple: three ingredients, not counting straightforward garnishes, sugar, seltzer and simple syrup. The goal was loads of refreshment with minimal effort.

Grownup Book Suggestion

Here's a book to add to your summer reading list.."People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks.  It uses as inspiration what is know as the Sarajevo Haggadah , and creates a tale of this book's history over centuries.  Brooks is a Pulitzer Prize winner for "March" (which is on my bedside table now) and certainly an author worth checking out.

Here's the review from Publishers Weekly.

Reading Geraldine Brooks's remarkable debut novel, Year of Wonders, or more recently March, which won the Pulitzer Prize, it would be easy to forget that she grew up in Australia and worked as a journalist. Now in her dazzling new novel, People of the Book, Brooks allows both her native land and current events to play a larger role while still continuing to mine the historical material that speaks so ardently to her imagination. Late one night in the city of Sydney, Hanna Heath, a rare book conservator, gets a phone call. The Sarajevo Haggadah, which disappeared during the siege in 1992, has been found, and Hanna has been invited by the U.N. to report on its condition. Missing documents and art works (as Dan Brown and Lev Grossman, among others, have demonstrated) are endlessly appealing, and from this inviting premise Brooks spins her story in two directions. In the present, we follow the resolutely independent Hanna through her thrilling first encounter with the beautifully illustrated codex and her discovery of the tiny signs-a white hair, an insect wing, missing clasps, a drop of salt, a wine stain-that will help her to discover its provenance. Along with the book she also meets its savior, a Muslim librarian named Karaman. Their romance offers both predictable pleasures and genuine surprises, as does the other main relationship in Hanna's life: her fraught connection with her mother. In the other strand of the narrative we learn, moving backward through time, how the codex came to be lost and found, and made. From the opening section, set in Sarajevo in 1940, to the final section, set in Seville in 1480, these narratives show Brooks writing at her very best. With equal authority she depicts the struggles of a young girl to escape the Nazis, a duel of wits between an inquisitor and a rabbi living in the Venice ghetto, and a girl's passionate relationship with her mistress in a harem. Like the illustrations in the Haggadah, each of these sections transports the reader to a fully realized, vividly peopled world. And each gives a glimpse of both the long history of anti-Semitism and of the struggle of women toward the independence that Hanna, despite her mother's lectures, tends to take for granted. Brooks is too good a novelist to belabor her political messages, but her depiction of the Haggadah bringing together Jews, Christians and Muslims could not be more timely. Her gift for storytelling, happily, is timeless. Copyright 2007 Publishers Weekly. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Shoprite Buy $75 Get $25 Gas Deal

Shoprite is offering a special, and too complicated, deal this week...Spend $75 in any combination of products from Kraft, P&G, General Mills, Unilever or Tyson and get a $25 Gas  Gift Card.  So it's a 33% savings...

How it Works:

This deal tracks on your Price Plus card for the entire week through 6/25. So, you can purchase products from these manufacturers in multiple transactions throughout the week. Once you hit the $75 mark, you will get a certificate printed at the bottom of your register receipt.
Once you earn your certificate, you pick up a gift card at the gift card display in the store and bring it the register to have it activated.

Fine Print:

Qualifying purchases are calculated BEFORE taxes, bottle deposits or fees, and the face value of manufacturer coupons and AFTER ShopRite store coupons, ShopRite Price Plus club card deductions and any doubled or tripled value of manufacturer coupons.  As I said, too confusing!!!

What to Buy At Shoprite this Week

With the kids about to leave for camp, I'm starting to cut back on buying groceries.  Planning on picking up steamed lobsters from Shoprite today for our Father's Day Dinner (I think they are $5.99 a pound, which is a good price).

Here are other things worth buying this week...
anything I've marked with a * means there is a newspaper coupon for this..check your piles

Ken's Marinade (must buy 2) - $1.50*

Pepperidge Farm Chunk Cookies - $2.50 (Check for packages with a $.55 coupon on the front)

(at $.20 a box after coupon, I've been buying this for the Food Bank)

Barilla Pasta $0.88
$1 off when you buy Barilla Pasta & Barilla Sauce from Barilla Coupon Book being given away at the store right now

Bailey's Coffee Creamers - $1.34* (may be a coupon in this sunday's paper)

Great Adventure Discounts

I'm trying to find the best deal on Great Adventure tickets...taking 2 adults and 3 kids, so the cost is sure to add up.  The adult tickets at the gate are
  • General Admission $59.99
  • Junior Under 54" $34.99...wow, my kids are taller than this, so we are all "general admission" tickets.

I  found an ONLINE OFFER on their website — $36.99... Buy your Six Flags tickets in advance and print them at home.  So $37*5=$185

Oh, here's another option..bring a specially marked Coke can and get adult tickets for the kids price...so my five tickets would be $175.

OK..found another.  Use the discount code GUIDEDOG to get $30 tickets online and some portion of your purchase goes to the Seeing Eye Dog Foundation.  Now we are down to $150 for the five tickets, although I just discovered there is a $5 fee PER TICKET for buying online!!!  So I'm back up to $185...

I checked my American Express and Marriott reward accounts, but they don't offer Great Adventure tickets.

Anyone have other ideas?

Anyone know of other deals out there?

6+1 Initiative

Did y'all catch this bit of controversy from the Millburn Board of Ed ?  One board member has suggested a substantial change to the way high school is organized.  Board President Michael Birnberg has suggested what he is calling a 6+1 initiative...high school students would take 6 classes instead of 7 until the AP exams in the Spring.  The last month of school would be more flexible, with possibly one intensive course of an internship.

Opinions?  I do hate how the last few weeks of school are devoted to movie watching.   And private schools have used this approach to curb senior burn out (and bad behavior) for years, by getting seniors off campus in May.  Wonder if it would work in Millburn?

Volunteer Opportunity

As I'm packing the kids up for camp and feeling overwhelmed by the errands and the bills,  I came across this reminder that we've got it pretty good.

Camp Sunshine offers year-round camping opportunities for kids with chronic and life threatening diseases.  They are always looking for volunteers to perform a range of tasks.  What made this particularly interesting to me is the opportunity to do this with your kid...Teens age 16 and 17 can volunteer with a parent.  Keeping this on my back burner, especially for my son's long spring breaks...

Mischarged at Shoprite

Grr!!!!!  I've never had this happen before.  The shelf price and the price at the register were different (just guess which was higher).  I didn't notice this until I got home.  I then drove back to Shoprite with my receipt and a chip on my shoulder.  I got reimbursed the difference, but what a pain in the neck!

Add to that the fact that I bought the same product last week, cant find my receipt, and Im sure I was overcharged then as well.

Dinner and Wine--a whole case of it!!!

Well, this is the most expensive Living Social deal that I've bought yet, but it seems like it will be alot of fun.

Enjoy a dinner for two, an evening winemaking experience, and take home a case of wine and a year-long membership for $100 -- a $210 value -- to Make Wine With Us in Wallington.  Click here to see the deal

A mainstay for wine enthusiasts, Make Wine With Us teaches members how to crush, press, bottle, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Its owners are American Wine Society certified wine judges, a distinction that requires four years of studying, tests, and wine tasting. Becoming a member requires a $15 permit (state law), but after your full-course, buffet dinner; three-hour winemaking event; and a case of the wine featured for the evening, it's a charge you won't quite mind. Drink up this deal and be the person who settles the next wine knowledge question.

On sale for $2.50, coupon doubles, so $1.00 after coupon.  And you don't have to go to Walgreeens (yuck!).

If it won't melt on the way home, I'm thinking of running over to Walgreens tomorrow to get in on this deal for Starbucks ice cream. Just head on over to coupons.com  and use zip code 98052 to print two coupons valid for $0.75/1 pint of Starbucks ice cream!

Starbucks ice cream 1 pint Buy 1 at $4.99 get 1 Free
Use 2 $0.75/1 coupons found here
 Final cost $1.49  per pint

BTW--in general, I hate shopping at Walgreens.  The stock is always incomplete and the signs suck.  Plus their frequent shoppers program is way too complicated.  Has anyone had better experiences than I have?

My CVS Trip Today

Scored at CVS today.  Got 4 John Freida shampoos, 2 bottles of Oral-B rinse, and 2 Oral-B battery operated toothbrushes.   My out-of-pocket total was $14.00 and I got $17.00 in ECBs back for my next shopping trip.  Can't complain!  My kids may be the only boys in the camp bunk with John Frieda salon shampoo, but who cares?

Fairchilds Market Deal

Today I bought a deal at Fairchilds Market  in Roseland from Living Social that you might want to check out.  Get $20 for $10, or $50 for $25, to spend on anything in the store.  This market is an upscale deli / wine shop / gift shop with great takeout.  I figured I could grab some lovely grown-up items for dinner this summer.  The New York Times gave it a rave review.

John Frieda at Target/CVS

Target has a deal this week on John Frieda products that is actually a money maker.  Whenever you buy 3 participating John Frieda products (including Full Repair products!), you’ll get back a $5 Target gift card!  Well, this deal gets even sweeter when you add in the high value $5/1 manufacturer’s coupons that are available in today’s Smart Source inserts (and the one from the Independent thrown in your driveway on Thursday)  and the $3/2 Target coupon that is still available to print!

IF YOU DONT WANT TO GO TO TARGET, OR DON'T HAVE ENOUGH COUPONS FOR THIS DEAL,  CVS IS OFFERING SOME OF THESE PRODUCTS FOR $5, MAKING THEM FREE AFTER COUPON.  BUT I LOVE THE CHALLENGE OF A MONEY MAKER!

Here’s how you can score one *HOT* deal… (thanks to Hip2Save for these).

Deal Scenario #1:
Buy 3 John Frieda Full Repair Protecting Root Lift Foam $5.99 = $17.97
Use the $3/2 John Frieda Full Repair Target store coupon found here
Plus, use 3 $5/1 John Frieda Full Repair Treatment, Styler or Finisher coupons found in the 6/5 SS
Pay $0.03
Get back a $5 Target Gift Card
Final cost FREE + $5.03 money maker!
If you only got the $2/1 coupon in today’s paper, you can still snag a pretty great deal…
Deal Scenario #2:
Buy 2 John Frieda Full Repair Root Lift $5.99
Buy 1 John Frieda Root Awakening $4.99
Subtotal $16.97
Use the $3/2 John Frieda Full Repair Target Store Coupon found here
Plus, use 3 $2/1 John Frieda coupons or Root Awakening coupons found in the 6/5 SS or the $2/1 Root Awakening coupon found here
Pay $7.97
Get back a $5 Target Gift Card
Final cost $2.97 for all 3!
It appears that a LOT of John Frieda products are included in this gift card promotion, including John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Shampoo or Conditioner, Select Frizz Ease, and Root Awakening Products and they all start at $4.99!  So even if you didn’t receive the high value $5 coupons in today’s paper or if you prefer to purchase all Root Awakening products (no Target coupon to pair with), you can still get a great deal!  Here’s how…
Deal Scenario #3:
Buy 3 John Frieda Root Awakening Shampoos $4.99 = $14.97
Use 3 $2/1 John Frieda Root Awakening coupons found in the 6/5 SS or found here
Pay $8.97
Get back Free $5 Target Gift Card
Final cost $3.97 for all 3!

Keep in mind that if your store still has the “Invisible Gift Card Glitch“, you need to be sure that your final total when using Manufacturer’s coupons does not drop below $10 or two of your coupons will not deduct the proper amount.  This means that you need to have at least an additional $7.03 in your order (that you won’t be using Manufactuer’s coupon on) to absorb your coupon value.  If you don’t, your first $5/1 coupon will scan at $5 off, your second coupon will scan for $2.97 and your third will scan at $0.00.  Be sure and use your $3/2 Target store coupon LAST as it has no affect on this glitch and will allow your total to drop below the $10.
