How to spend $275,000

Today is the first day in the least 14 or so years that I haven't had regular child care, give or take a few transitions.  In nearly 14 years, my back of the envelope estimate is that I have spent about $275,000 on child care, ignoring taxes, summer camp, bonuses, an extra car, extra car repairs etc.!   And that's with relatively modestly-priced child care---nanny shares, au pairs, and even a neighbor.

Has it been worth it?  Well, I've brought home more money than I've spent on child care, as well as socked away retirement savings, gotten health care, made friendships, and grown as a person and professional.  We've been incredibly lucky to have had nearly consistently excellent care and lovely women in our lives.  But its time for a change...

So wish me luck, healthy children and few snow days!

More Book Suggestions

If you and your kids only saw the movie "City of Embers" and never read the book series, this vacation would be a great time to give it a try.  Good for maybe 3rd-6th grade.  I sent these books to all my younger nieces--there is a great female protagonist.  But there is also a major male character and my son really enjoyed this series.  It was the first of his books that I really liked reading myself!!!

You can use this Amazon link to read a fuller description and reviews.

Shopping Sunday

Well, I decided to follow some of my own blog posts this morning and rolled into action.

Macy's: got two pairs of jeans for my ever-growing older son; was able to use the 15% off coupon and then got two $10 gift cards for future purchases as part of their denim sale. The saleslady had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for the gift card, but the signs were up in the store.

Staples:  got a bunch of office supplies for free after rebate, will need to enter the codes into the rebate site tonight.  2 free packs of printer paper which my younger son loves for his projects and I love for printing coupons.

Shoprite:  all my well-laid plans went well, and I got about $250 worth of groceries for free
(spent about $65, got $100 back in coupons in later weeks, but actual value of the groceries pre-sale/coupons was $250).  Now I have to decide what I'm keeping and what I am donating to the food bank.

I also picked up a Redbox movie with a free rental code.

I bought the kids two new books as well, and shockingly had no coupon at all for this!  (Although I am a Barnes and Noble member so get 20% off..perhaps I should count that.)  "The Maze" which came highly recommended, is too new to get through interlibrary loan.  Oh yeah, I got 3 more books from interlibrary loan---getting value from my tax dollars.

I'm shopped out.

Bon Appetit $4.99

Today at Tanga , you can score a 1 year subscription to Bon Appetit Magazine for ONLY $4.99!! Just use coupon code FOOD at checkout. The suggested retail on this magazine is $54, so you’re getting a subscription for over 90% off!  This is always my first choice of magazine to read in doctors offices--might be nice to get it at home.

UPDATED Mom, I'm Bored: Book Suggestions

UPDATE:  I posted this last night.  And now I discover that this Sunday's NY Times Magazine  has an article on the appeal of these dystopia books for teens--specifically talking about "The Hunger Games."   Aren't you glad you read it first here?

If you hear this cry from your child, you might tell them to go read a book. Click here for a great list of books if you or your child are looking for some new suggestions.

Among these I would highlight, for teens,
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Compound by S.A. Bodeen

The number one book for middle school and up is "The Hunger Games" by Susan Collins.  This is actually a three book series--the third book, "MockingJay" came out this summer.  Everyone I've spoken to who had read it really enjoyed it.  Its on Matthew's book suggestions on the side of this blog, btw.

Shout Out: Arturo's Restaurant in Maplewood

The Chef at teeny tiny Arturo's in Maplewood has just been nominated for a James Beard award for "Rising Star Chef of the Year."  That's the Academy Award of cooking.  Rumor is you can't get a Saturday night reservation for their 6 course tasting menu until May. (I'll let you know when I call to make a reservation tomorrow).

But in the meantime, its still a great place for a delicious well-priced dinner.  Incredible wood oven pizza, great pastas and other lovely small plates, with lots of specials.  BYOB.  It is small--personally I prefer this for dinner with my husband at a tiny table for two and leave the kids at home...they won't appreciate pizza this good and sophisticated anyway.

Here is the New York Times review to read.

Redbox: How To

So I've gotten feedback from some of you that you have never used Redbox.  So here's a quick how to.

First, locate a Redbox. (Millburn, Springfield and Livingston Shoprites have them, among other locations).  Or better yet, first go online and reserve the movie you want.

If you have a promo code, look for *Rent With a Promo Code* on the lower left corner of the screen - under *Rent A DVD*. Once you enter the code, select your movie and add it to your cart.  Accept the terms and make sure you have a card to swipe.  This won't charge anything unless you don't return the movie or return it late for a $1.00 charge.  That's it.  Without a promo code its $1.00 a night.

Oh, and did you know you can return them to ANY Redbox kiosk?

UPDATED--Ebates, a Great Shoppping Site

My Ebates refund check arrived in the mail today--$17.25--primarily from a great rebate on the purchase of the Enterainment Coupon books.  This site is really worth using if you shop online.  They even have travel rebates for major hotels.

REPOSTING

I've increased the amount of my shopping that I do online; I can shop at 2 in the morning, and I find the prices are better.  I've started doing most of my online shopping through Ebates

I link through Ebates to the other stores I shop at (Target, Staples, Shutterfly, Macys etc.), shop as I normally do, and then get a Cash Back rebate for my shopping anywhere from about 2-20% depending on the store. I've been doing this for awhile--it is legit.  The other nice thing about the Ebates site is they link to savings with exclusive coupons, free shipping offers, and limited-time sales!

When you sign up with Ebates you get a $5 bonus when you make your first purchase!  Some great deals at the moment include 20% cash back at Kodak Gallery and 5% cash back at Macys,

Happy shopping!

A Valentine's Thought

For a glimpse of what I do during my day job, take a look at this piece I wrote for Valentine's Day.  And feel free to print it out and share it with the man in your life!

V is for Vasectomy

Rub Me All Over

In honor a Valentine's Day...get some good rubbing going!

One of the quickest ways to add some flavor in the kitchen is a spice "rub"; I use the word rub loosely, as its often more of a shake and sprinkle.

We have two store-bought rubs we like.   McCormick Grill Mates work fine in the oven and I've been using the mesquite on chicken and pork with great success.

The Magic Salmon seasoning really is magic--sprinkle liberally on a big fillet from Costco, and dinner is served!

If you would like to make your own rub, here is a recipe from from author Susie Fishbein--I would personally increase the paprika.

  • SPICE RUB:
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

Qdoba: BOGO Free Feb 14

Qdoba (in the Short Hills Mall among other places) is offering Buy One, Get One Free entrees tomorrow, in honor of Valentine's Day.  Just gotta kiss someone!  So grab a kid, your girlfriend, or your hubby, head to the mall and plant a kiss--then eat up!

I would kiss before the onions and salsa.

Milano Cookie Deal this Week

$0.55/1 Milano Cookies Printable Coupon
(Remember, this doubles to $1.10 at Shoprite, making the cookies 89 cents)

Also, you can get a $1/1 Pepperidge Farm Cookies printable by clicking this link.

Both of these are offered through "Bricks coupons."  If you hit your back button while they are printing, and resend, you can get two prints of each coupon.  Shoprite will let you use 4 like coupons in a single order.

I got 5 bags this afternoon...how long do we think it will take a teenage boy to eat all 5?!
